Project Food
You must cook and serve a meal for your family. This will include choosing a menu, shopping for ingredients you do not already have at home, preparing the meal, serving the meal, and cleaning up after the meal. You must use authentic recipes from Spanish-speaking countries which I have approved in advance. You may work with a small group of other students (no more than four people in a group) if you wish. Your family will determine one third of your grade based upon the following criteria:
Dear parents,
Spanish I students will be studying Chapter Six this month, which involves food and restaurant vocabulary. As part of this unit, they have each been asked to plan, shop for, cook (with your assistance if necessary), serve, and clean up a meal for their family which consists of the following:
* an appetizer, soup, salad, or other side dish
* a main dish
* a dessert
Each recipe should be an authentic one from a Spanish-speaking country. However, all three recipes do not have to be from the same country. Because most students are already quite familiar with many Mexican dishes, I am requiring that they choose recipes from other countries. Upon completion of the meal, I am requesting that your family grade the student on this third of the project by filling out the grading rubric and comments sheet attached to this letter.
The remainder of this project requires each student to submit a booklet which includes his or her menu and shopping list written in Spanish, copies of the recipes used to prepare the meal, eight photos of the experience, and two Spanish sentences describing each picture. The rough draft of the booklet must be submitted for corrections by ____________. The final copy of the booklet will be due for grading on _______________. Students will be given class time to select recipes and to receive help with the written portion of this assignment. Additionally, they will be allowed to check out a disposable camera if they do not have access to one.
Your support is critical to the success of this project. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to spend time with your child, to share in the expansion of your child’s cultural horizons, and to make your child more aware of the time and effort you spend in the kitchen on his or her behalf!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the answering machine in the Foreign Language Office at [insert phone number].
I appreciate your involvement!
Sincerely,
